How Do I Stop My Ragdoll From Shedding?

To stop your ragdoll from shedding you should groom them regularly with a suitable ragdoll cat brush. We recommend brushing your ragdoll cat at least twice a week. You might find you need to groom them more in the winter months as they shed less and their fur may become too thick or get tangled. Ragdoll cats don’t have an undercoat so it’s important to choose a brush that is recommended for ragdoll cats and kittens.

How Do I Brush My Ragdoll?

It’s important to get your ragdoll cat used to being brushed from an early age if possible. Firstly, try and stick to a routine. We brush our ragdoll cats twice a week using the same brush, which helps them get used to brushing as part of their weekly routine. You could also treat your ragdoll by giving them a nice massage on their head, ears, or belly as part of the grooming process, or by rewarding them with a few treats after you’ve finished. By treating your ragdoll they’ll start to associate being brushed with things they enjoy, which will make the grooming process for everyone! Also, it’s important not to be too rough when brushing your ragdoll cat or kitten – if they’re meowing or yelping you are probably brushing too hard or pulling their delicate skin. Finally, when brushing your ragdoll look out for matted fur which can’t be detangled using a brush. Instead of attempting to comb it out, we recommend carefully using Pet Grooming Scissors first and then brushing around the area.

Can You Use a Furminator on Ragdolls?

A Furminator cat brush is not recommended for use on ragdoll cats because they don’t have an undercoat. The Furminator is a great tool for long-haired cats and helps de-shed a lot of matted hair quickly, however, it is too harsh on a ragdoll’s skin and could end up pulling and hurting them.

Do Ragdolls Get Fluffier With Age?

Yes, ragdolls do get fluffier with age but they will stop getting fluffier around 2 years old. Depending on their fur type, your ragdoll’s fur may get fluffier, longer, or both. For example with our seal sepia mink ragdoll, we’ve found his hair has gotten a lot longer but not thicker. However, our chocolate seal point ragdoll’s fur has got longer and fluffier with age, in particular around his collar. Typically ragdoll cats stop growing around age 2 so you should find the coat they have at 2 years old is the level of fluff they’ll have throughout their adult life. Also, you will most likely find they are fluffier during the winter months as they don’t shed as much of their fur.

Should You Brush a Ragdoll’s Tail?

Should you brush a ragdoll cat’s tail? The answer is yes, you should! Their tails can pick up more dirt than the rest of their fur and they can also get matted so it’s important to brush your ragdoll cat’s tail just like you do with the rest of their fur. However, you’ll probably find your ragdoll cats don’t like their tail being brushed so it’s important to get them used to it and not be too rough when brushing or combing.
