- Indoor breed. As an indoor breed, ragdoll cats will use their litter box a lot more than your average outdoor cat. Therefore, you want to choose a litter box that is both durable and hygienic.
- Large cats. Ragdolls tend to be larger than the average domestic cat, with some males weighing up to 20 pounds/9kg! Mr.Fudge, our 2-year-old seal point ragdoll, weighs around 6kg now, and we’re pretty certain he’s got more growing to do! - Fur type. A ragdoll’s fur, as gorgeous as it is, can sometimes track litter around. If you’re already a ragdoll cat owner, you’ll know their fur means a lot more daily cleaning is needed, but choosing the right litter box and litter can help minimize this issue.
- Fussy felines. Like all cats, ragdoll cats can be super fussy with where they do their business! So you’ll want to ensure their litter box is always clean.
- Multiple cats. For example, it’s recommended that you have one more litter box than the number of cats you have. However, we only have two litter boxes despite having two ragdoll cats and this works well for us.

Sifting litter boxes are the best type of litter box we’ve found for ragdoll cats. The one we use is Brit Pet’s Eco Sieve Litter Tray, which is definitely the best cat litter tray we’ve found. We chose the “maxi” size for our ragdolls and our advice is the bigger the better when it comes to buying litter boxes for ragdolls.
Although the Brit Pet litterbox is UK-based, there are some alternative litter boxes on the market that offer a similar sifting design, such as this sifting litter box from Amazon and the Vibrant Life Sifting Cat Litter Box.

We love our sifting litter box because the cat litter lasts a lot longer and the smell is so much better. With sifting litter boxes you need to use wooden cat litter pellets. We buy ours in bulk to reduce the cost even further.
2. Extra Large Litter Boxes
If you don’t want a sifting litter box, your next best option is to choose the biggest litter box you can!
Designed with larger cats in mind, extra-large litter boxes offer a generous size and high walls to keep litter contained.

We’re a fan of hooded litter boxes because they contain some of the smell and look nicer within your home.

When we say in-built litter boxes, we’re referring to litter boxes within pieces of furniture.
We don’t have an in-built litter box yet as we’re currently renovating our house, but the plan is to get one to go in the hallway to hide the litter box as best we can!

The one brand that always comes to mind (and stalks me via Instagram ads) is the Litter Robot.

With sifting litter boxes, you need to choose wooden pellet cat litter. We’ve tried a few litter options throughout the years, and we found wooden cat litter is the best cat litter for long-haired cats because it’s not as dusty as clumping clay litter.
However, if you decide that clumping clay litter is the best option for you, we recommend spending a little bit more on a super-absorbent, low-dust option, such as the BoxiePro’s clumping clay cat litter.
Although it may be tempting to choose lower-cost cat litter, in the long run you’ll end up having to change the less expensive cat litter more often anyway, so the cost will average out.
