Seal Sepia Ragdoll – Facts & Photos

A seal sepia ragdoll is a rare variety of brown ragdoll cat, known for its darker coat and green or amber colored eyes. Although they are rare, seal sepia ragdolls are still recognized by organizations such as the Cat Fanciers’ Association. We are lucky enough to have a seal sepia ragdoll, Teddy, who features throughout this guide!

Typical Characteristics of a Seal Sepia Ragdoll

Fur Color & Type

Seal sepia ragdolls have a rich, dark brown (“seal”) coat, which typically intensifies in color as they get older.

A seal sepia ragdoll also has a warm, lighter brown undertone, hence the term ‘sepia’. Here is a photo of our seal sepia ragdoll, Teddy. As you can see he’s got brown fur everywhere, but it’s lighter brown under his chin and belly!

Another characteristic of our seal sepia ragdoll, Teddy, is that his fur is mink. Mink refers to a cat’s fur type and not their coloring or pattern. A mink ragdoll has a much smoother and finer coat than other types of ragdoll cat. Teddy’s fur is very silky and smooth but it also means he requires more grooming than the average ragdoll cat because it gets matted regularly.

Seal Sepia Ragdoll Eye Color

Seal sepia ragdolls don’t tend to have blue eyes like the majority of other ragdoll cats, even though they are technically a type of chocolate ragdoll cat based on their fur color.

Instead, seal sepia’s have gorgeous green or gold eyes, a unique trait that sets them apart from traditional ragdolls.

Size

Like the standard ragdoll breed, seal sepia ragdolls are larger cats than the average moggy.

However, the size of your ragdoll cat will vary from the guidelines you may read, so it’s important to get to know what a normal weight for your ragdoll is so you don’t worry if they’re out of the average range. Weighing your ragdoll cats regularly and visiting your vet at least annually is recommended.

Our seal sepia ragdoll, Teddy, is only 2.5 years old so he’s still growing. Teddy currently weighs 10 pounds and he’s likely to keep growing until around the age of 4.

On average, male ragdolls typically weigh between 12-20 pounds (5-9kg) fully grown, and female ragdoll cats can weigh between 8-15 pounds (3.5-7kg).

Temperament

Seal Sepia Ragdolls are known for their calm and affectionate ways. Their temperament is the same as other types of ragdoll cat, making them a lovely addition to your household!

One of the best things about ragdolls is how friendly and sociable they are; they love to cuddle and are usually great with children and other pets.

However don’t be completely fooled, ragdoll cats still have their naughty moments! Both of our ragdolls get the ‘zoomies’ like other cats (and dogs!) and we occasionally find them doing cheeky things like climbing up the blinds, licking the windows or knocking things off the counter!

Seal Sepia Ragdoll Care

A seal sepia ragdoll needs the same level of care as any other ragdoll type, which includes things like:

  1. A mentally stimulating environment with cat toys, climbing trees, windows to look out of etc.
  2. More attention than your average cat.
  3. Regular, routine check-ups at the vet.
  4. A well-balanced diet.
  5. Regular grooming sessions with a suitable comb for ragdoll cats.
